Description

Eastern Shore Classic Cars is excited to present this rare 1958 Renault Dauphine “Gordini”. This example is in outstanding condition and even features a roll back sun roof rarely seen on this vehicle. The Renault Dauphine was introduced in 1956 and at its debut, it was an instant hit. In the rear was a water-cooled 845-cc (51.6-cu.in.), 30-hp, OHC four-cylinder and a three-speed transaxle. Under the front hood a surprising 7 cubic feet of luggage space exists and a crank for cold weather starts. If you flipped away the door behind the front license plate, you found the spare tire, which slid out easily. Perhaps the most striking thing about the Dauphine was the Italian influenced exterior styling. With a wheelbase measuring 227 centimeters (89.4 inches), Renault managed to create a small saloon with rounded edges, perfect proportions, and just enough accents to avoid it looking gaudy. It was stylish and, more importantly, photographed well from any angle. A clue to the engine location was air intakes integrated into the rear doors. The gas filler was also under the rear hood. The front suspension was conventional, with upper and lower control arms with springs mounted between them and an anti-roll bar. Out back were "high pivot" swing axles with the shocks mounted within the springs in "trumpet casings.” Amédée Gordini, a French race car driver, was hired by Renault to make the Dauphine a true competitor. In 1957, the Dauphine-Gordini, with a 38-hp engine and four-speed transaxle debuted. With a top speed of 120 kph (75 mph), it won the 1958 Monte Carlo Rally. This is a rare opportunity for the Renault collector to acquire a “Gordini” in excellent condition. This is driver and show ready. The interior is spotless and the sheet metal is in excellent condition. Those in the know will appreciate how difficult it is to find one in this condition. Please contact hank at hank@easternshoreclassiccars.com or text at 201-317-9277 for details. The vehicle is located in South Central NJ. Offered at 21,000.00
